Mass Cycle Rally - 10% Cycle Target - 45 people attend
17th Feb 2012
Mass Cyclists Rally For Strong Cycling Targets - was held on the Fri 17th Feb 2012 in Adelaide St Belfast and attended by 45 people that all signed a letter calling for a 10% cycle target for NI.
The event received excellent coverage on BBC TV, Radio and a full page in the Belfast Telegraph and half page in the Irish News.
The government has just published a draft Active Travel Strategy which is a great document outlining a vision of increased levels of cycling and walking, however we need to give it real teeth with ambitious cycling targets.
This was one opportunity to drive government investment into cycling by joining Belfast Cycle City Campaign’s call for 10% of all trips to be made by bicycle by 2020 mirroring the targets in Scotland and Ireland.
Object to Reduced Cycling in Belfast City Centre
2nd Sept 2010
Action needed: Object to the proposed reduction from two-way to
one-way cycling in Queen's Street, Belfast by the 9th of Sept.
A Traffic Order has been published proposing to make Queen's Street one-way, this will be a major obstacle to cycling in the city centre
and a step in the wrong direction for cycling generally in Belfast.
The simple solution is a dedicated cycle lane that would allow cycling
in both directions called a contra-flow cycle lane. The road is
wide enough to accommodate this. The closing date for objections to
the Traffic Order is Thursday the 9th of September, so please take
action now, make the voices of cyclists be heard, and send the email
below by copying and pasting the text (feel free to modify and add
your own comments).

I object to the reduction in cycling from two-way to one-way in Queen
Street, Belfast, as detailed in the Traffic Order.
1. This will make the city centre less permeable to cyclists, forcing
cyclists onto busier, fast multilane roads.
2. The current proposal will act as a disincentive to cycling, a step
in the wrong direction for cycling and running contrary to the
European wide drive to encourage cycling in cities.
3. The majority of Belfast City Councillors support the Belfast Cycle
City Vision of 10% journeys by bicycle by 2020, and this proposal will
make cycling targets more difficult to achieve.
4. Disincentivising cycling will keep vehicular traffic congestion,
pollution and carbon dioxide emission in the city high.
5. A simple solution is possible with a contra-flow cycle lane which
the road is wide enough to accommodate.
