The Letter:

Conor Murphy,

2010 Belfast Cycling Budgets Cut by 98%

I would like to express my anger and frustration over the draconian 98% cuts to the Belfast Cycle budget this year, whilst your investment in strategic roads increased 51% this year.

Whilst cities across Europe are investing £15 per year per person in cycling, you are going the opposite direction reducing our investment from £1 per person per year to 2p per person per year.

With cost benefit ratios of up to 1:38 for cycle investment far exceeding the ratios for roads investment, we cannot understand, that with an increasing total budget you are cutting the cycling budget and increasing spending on roads.

We are calling for -

1. Complete reinstatement of the 2010 cycling budget.

2. Commitment to a 10% cycling target for Belfast by 2020

3. Delivery of a detailed strategy from 2010 to 2020 on how to achieve these targets.

4. Commitment to invest £15 per person per year in line with other UK and Irish cities.

PLEASE COPY AND PASTE THIS STATEMENT INTO THE BOX BELOW

Cuts have just been announced for this year reducing the cycle budget in Belfast by 98% from £450,000 down to £8,000, whilst at the same time spending on new "strategic" roads increased by 51% from £149m to £225m. This is an insult to cyclists.

Tell Conor Murphy, the Minister for the Department of Regional Development, who is in charge of transport budgets, that this completely unacceptable! The Belfast Cycle City campaign has been calling for increased cycle investment of £15 per person per year in line with other cities and this year we have gone from £1 per person per year to 2p per person per year. Cost Benefit ratios of up to 1:38 have been proven for cycle investment, far exceeding the ratios for road investment.
